HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $ 1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

LG will use the operating software, used in now-defunct Palm smartphones years ago, for its “smart” or Internet-connected TVs. The Asian electronics company had worked with HP on WebOS before offering to buy it outright.

Under the terms of their agreement, LG acquires the operating software’s source code, associated documentation, engineering talent, various associated websites, and licenses under HP’s intellectual property including patents covering fundamental operating system and user interface technology.

HP will retain the patents and all the technology relating to the cloud service of webOS, HP Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte said in an interview.

“As we looked at it, we saw a very compelling IP that was very unique in the marketplace,” he said, adding that HP has already had a partnership with LG on webOS before the deal was announced.

“As a result of this collaboration, LG offered to acquire the webOS operating system technology,” Veghte said.

Skott Ahn, President and CTO, LG Electronics, said the company will incorporate the operating system in the Smart TV line-up first “and then hopefully all the other devices in the future.”

Both companies declined to reveal the terms of the deal.

LG will keep the WebOS team in Silicon Valley and, for now, will continue to be based out of HP offices, Ahn said.

HP opened its webOS mobile operating system to developers and companies in 2012 after trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, one of the pioneers of the smartphone industry.

The company had tried to build products based on webOS with the now-defunct TouchPad tablet its flagship product.

HP launched and discontinued the TouchPad in 2010, a little over a month after it hit store shelves with costly fanfare after it saw poor demand for a tablet priced on par with Apple’s dominant iPad.

WebOS is widely viewed as a strong mobile platform, but has been assailed for its paucity of applications, an important consideration while choosing a mobile device.

LG aims to raise smartphone sales by 52 percent

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — LG Electronics Inc. is aiming to raise its smartphone sales by more than half this year as it makes a shift from basic phones to high-end devices after lagging competitors for several years.

The South Korean company aims to sell more than 40 million smartphones in 2013, it said in a statement on Monday. LG shipped 26.3 million smartphones in 2012, fewer than HTC Corp. and Research In Motion Ltd. which each shipped more than 32 million smartphones.

To meet the sales goal, LG will release handsets in all price ranges from high-tier to affordable models and go all out in both developed and emerging markets.

“We aim to improve profitability and also to become a top-tier smartphone brand,” Park Jong-seok, head of LG’s mobile phone business, told reporters at a mobile industry fair in Barcelona, according to the statement.

LG faces similar challenges to other second-tier smartphone vendors. They are squeezed by the two smartphone giants — Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. — that are dominating most of the profit in the smartphone industry and also by Chinese makers that are expanding in the smartphone markets of fast-growing emerging countries.

But LG hopes to make its Optimus brand stand out by drawing on technologies from other parts of the LG empire. The company is the largest shareholder in LG Display Co. and has collaborated with other LG affiliates on batteries and cameras.

LG was the world’s third-largest maker of cellphones in 2009 but was caught off guard by the popularity of smartphones. In the fourth quarter of 2012, LG sold fewer phones than Chinese rivals Huawei Technologies Ltd. and ZTE Corp., which are expanding shipments of their cheaper smartphones.

Its mobile communications division was profitable for the first time in three years last year as it moved its focus from basic phones to lucrative smartphones.

Samsung sets sights on iPad mini with new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet

Samsung (005930) is finally gaining some momentum in the tablet market after a slow start with the original Galaxy Tab, which launched in late 2010. The South Korean consumer electronics giant now has a number of slates available in the 7- and 10-inch ranges, but Apple’s (AAPL) 8-inch iPad mini opened new doors for mid-size tablets following its release this past November. Samsung was already putting a mid-range tablet together when the iPad mini debuted last year, and now the company is finally ready to take the wraps off its latest Note series device: The Galaxy Note 8.0.

With a footprint that measures 8.3 inches by 5.4 inches, the Galaxy Note 8.0 can be used comfortably with one hand but provides much more screen real estate than a 7-inch tablet. As this slate falls into Samsung’s Note lineup, it also includes an S Pen stylus and an updated suite of stylus-ready apps.

Samsung’s new 8-inch Note slides perfectly into the gap between the Galaxy Note II and the Galaxy Note 10.1. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Samsung Mobile’s director of product planning Shoneel Kolhatkar said during a briefing.

Key specs include an 8-inch 1280 x 800-pixel TFT display, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, microSDXC support, a 4,600 mAh battery, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and a sleek case that is 25% thinner that the Galaxy Note 10.1. The Note 8.0 also includes an integrated 3G antenna, but a Wi-Fi-only version will be available shortly after the 3G version launches.

While Samsung focused mainly on the consumer market with the first Galaxy Note tablet, The Note 8.0 is as much about enterprise as it is about consumers. ”The next big thing is being extended to business,” Samsung Electronics’ marketing boss Travis Merrill told reporters at a recent meeting in New York City. Great features like the ability to run multiple apps at once in different windows extends the slate’s utility in a business environment, and Samsung’s “SAFE” certification means the tablet is secure.

Other intriguing features include a new “Readers Mode,” which conserves battery, dims the screen and changes the tablet’s contrast settings to make it a great eReader, and a host of new second screen features that make the Note 8.0 a solid TV companion.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 will launch in a number of markets around the world including the United States beginning in the second quarter this year. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Samsung’s full press release follows below, and be sure to check out our hands-on impressions of Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet.

A NEW ERA OF PORTABILITY AND EVERYDAY PRODUCTIVITY

SEOUL, Korea [February 24, 2011] – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today announced the launch of the 8 inch tablet, the GALAXY Note 8.0; a new era of intelligent Note technology set to re-ignite the mid-size tablet category that Samsung established in 2010. “The GALAXY Note 8.0 breaths fresh life into the category as it delivers the perfect fusion of portability and everyday productivity – the result is a pioneering, pocket-sized solution that enhances and enriches our everyday lives, whether at work or play,” added Shin.

At the core of the GALAXY Note 8.0’s innovative solutions are beneficial functions, including multi-window options to split the portable 8inch screen and allow optimal access to a number of live applications; a new generation of Samsung’s intelligent S Pen with advanced usability; access to a suite of S Note templates and tools that allow you to create, edit, manage and share everyday documents; the Samsung “reading mode” technology to enjoy e books with optimized resolution, video and voice calls*. WebMD Health Corp., up $ 4.14 at $ 20.44

The health website predicted another sales decline for this year, but the drop was not as steep as Wall Street expected.

Charter Communications Inc., up $ 7.99 at $ 85.02

New customers and more video and advertising sales helped the cable TV provider narrow its fourth-quarter loss.

Nokia to sell cheaper phones to counter low-end rivals – sources

PARIS (Reuters) – Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is set to launch cheaper handset models in an attempt to fend off growing competition from Chinese rivals in the low-end market, company sources said on Friday.

The new models, due to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress industry convention in Barcelona next week, show Nokia is expanding its focus after concentrating in the past two years on catching up with Apple and Samsung in more expensive smartphones.

The sources said Nokia will introduce cut-price mobile phones aimed at competing with the likes of Huawei and ZTE, as well as a new, lower-price model of its Lumia smartphones running on Windows Phone 8 software.

Details such as exact pricing were not available, and a company spokesman declined to comment.

The Lumia smartphone has widely been seen as a make-or-break phone for Nokia, but analysts estimate Nokia’s market share in the high-margin smartphone business is still only around 5 percent.

It sold 4.4 million Lumia devices in the fourth quarter, including the new Lumia 820 and 920, which were launched in November.

On Twitter, a peanut gallery mocks the Oscars

NEW YORK (AP) — You can simply tune into the Oscars. Or you can watch them with the peanut gallery on Twitter.

While Hollywood parades in tuxedos and gowns, grandly celebrating itself, a freewheeling cacophony of quips and sarcasm — something like a digital, million-times multiplied version of those balcony Muppet onlookers, Statler and Waldorf — will provide a welcome and riotous counter-narrative to the pomp.

The second-screen experience is never better than on Oscar night, when a separate (and some might say superior) entertainment experience plays out on social media. The running commentary, in which comedians and others parody the glamorous stars and their sometimes laughable speeches, has become as central to the Academy Awards as the red carpet.

“Following the Oscars on Twitter is like watching the show with one hundred million of your drunkest friends,” says Andy Borowitz, the humorist and author who’s often been a standout tweeter on Oscar night. Last year, he succinctly summarized the previous two best-picture winners, “The King’s Speech” and “The Artist,” as “an English dude who couldn’t speak” and “a French dude no one could hear.”

Live tweeting major TV events, from the Super Bowl to the Grammy Awards, has become engrained in our viewing by now, forming a virtual water cooler that has boosted ratings. But the Academy Awards stream is particularly captivating because it provides an antidote to the on-screen, buttoned-down glamour. It’s as if there’s not an “SAP” button on your remote, but a “YUKS” one, bringing you play-by-play from some of the funniest people in cyberspace. Comedians assemble as if by duty.

“You gotta say something. Someone has to say something,” says comedian Billy Eichner. “To just stand by and watch it happen is almost too tense. It’s cathartic. You’ve got to just get it out on Twitter because if not, we’re all going to be bottled up thinking about how awkward Anne Hathaway made it for one billion people in real time. I don’t begrudge her the award; I’m just saying she’s a ridiculous person.”

As host of Funny or Die’s “Billy on the Street,” which airs on Fuse, Eichner aggressively and comically interviews passersby about pop culture. So he’s particularly adept at expressing all-caps mockery when it comes to the stars of Hollywood. In the awards circuit leading up to the Oscars, he’s zeroed in on Anne Hathaway, the odds-on favorite to win best supporting actress for her performance in “Les Miserables.”

In Hathaway, Eichner recognizes a great actress, but also a striving theater geek. Nothing is funnier, he says, “than the mix of ego and lack of self-awareness, like Jodie Foster’s Golden Globes speech.”

“Ultimately, it’s just fun because the whole thing is so ridiculous,” says Eichner. “It’s like, why not comment on it? What is it even there for other than to be commented on?”

The Oscars has become one of the biggest social media events of the year. Last year’s telecast at one point set a then-record for 18,718 tweets-per-second. A statuette could be handed out for a new award: most tweeted tweet. In 2011, that honor went to The Onion, which lamented: “How rude — not a single character from Toy Story 3 bothered to show up.”

Last year, “The Artist” may have won best picture, but Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” easily bested it with 110,179 tweets to 78,509 for “The Artist,” according to Twitter metrics analyst TweetReach.

This year, the academy has partnered with Twitter to track the top categories with an index measuring the percentage of positive tweets about the nominees. Leading as of Tuesday wasn’t the favorite “Argo,” nor was it Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” but rather David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook.” So if the film, widely considered the dark horse in the best picture race, wins on Sunday, Twitter will have predicted it.

Mark Ghuneim, chief executive of social media measurement firm Trendrr, says that during the Oscars, Twitter is “‘Mystery Science Theater 3000,’ for real,” referring to the cult TV show in which a man and two robot sidekicks wisecrack their way through B-movies.

“It’s really like you’ll never watch TV alone ever again, if you don’t want to,” says Ghuneim. “It’s a natural evolution in television and that’s why it’s so prevalent.”

With real-time data from services like Trendrr, the Oscar conversation can be tracked, revealing which moments resound and provoke audiences. Last year, Angelina Jolie’s leg-baring pose as a presenter immediately put Twitter in hyper-drive, spawning parody accounts from the perspective of her right leg.

It’s such moments where Twitter becomes Oscar’s dance partner. Viewers celebrate with — and chortle at — Hollywood’s self-seriousness, combining together for a TV experience greater than the sum of its parts.

When the 85th annual Academy Awards air Sunday on ABC, countless comedians and others at home will be ready on their mobile phones and laptops with tweets to skewer.

“I just pray we all survive Anne Hathaway’s acceptance speech,” says Eichner. “And, to be honest, I have my doubts.”

Sony set to make pre-emptive strike on Microsoft with PS4

TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp is expected to showcase a new PlayStation console on Wednesday in a pre-emptive strike against Microsoft Corp’s bid to make its Xbox the world’s leading hub for household entertainment.

The rare PlayStation event in New York comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360, which beats the seven-year-old PlayStation 3′s online network with features such as voice commands on interactive gaming and superior connectivity to smartphones and tablets.

“Their focus is on establishing a beachhead for the next generation of consoles, and that’s what February 20 is all about,” said P.J. McNealy, CEO and founder of Digital World Research. “The reality is they have been playing catch-up.”

Pushing ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo Co Ltd’s new Wii U could help Sony revive an electronics business hurt by a dearth of hit gadgets, a collapse in TV sales and the convergence of consumer interest around tablets and smartphones built by rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Tablets and smartphones already account for around 10 percent of the $ 80 billion gaming market. Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of game-only consoles.

After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox’s 67 million installed base and well behind the 100-million selling Wii, analysts said.

A lackluster launch in November of the Wii successor, the Wii U, gives Sony a chance to focus on toppling Microsoft as all three battle the encroachment of casual gaming on tablets and smartphones. Nintendo cut its sales target to 4 million machines from 5.5 million for the year ending March 31.

STREAMING

Microsoft’s answer to the casual gaming threat has been software that gives users extra content and allows them to surf the Internet from their mobile devices. The Xbox already streams Netflix and ESPN and links to tablets and smartphones using Windows or Apple’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android. Sony’s PS3 online network has lagged.

“For Sony, they have to come out and make this PlayStation event the definitive statement of why gamers need to adopt the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation Orbis or whatever they end up calling it,” said Greg Miller, PlayStation executive editor at video game site IGN.com.

Sony’s purchase in July of U.S. cloud-based gaming company Gaikai for $ 380 million hints that the Japanese company will pursue a similar streaming strategy to Microsoft. Sony, industry watchers say, may also offer an expanded range of free games to counter the threat from casual gaming.

Sony, which under its CEO Kazuo Hirai is focusing on gaming, mobile devices and cameras, needs a hit product. But by betting on a PS3 successor, Hirai, whose most profitable business is life insurance, risks deepening consumer electronic losses as he will have to sell consoles at below the manufacturing cost to gain market traction.

That choice is made harder because the other two pillars of Hirai’s new Sony – cameras and mobile – are losing money.

Sony expects to post a $ 1.4 billion operating profit in the current fiscal year. Yet, much of that rebound is gains from offloading real estate, including $ 1.1 billion for its New York headquarters.

The PlayStation event in New York starts at 2300 GMT (1800 EST).

Sony cuts price of Vita handheld games console in Japan

TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp on Monday slashed the price of its struggling Vita handheld games console in Japan in a bid to spur sales of the device as gamers switch to free or cheap games played on tablet computers and smartphones.

The maker of Playstation consoles trimmed the price of its 3G Wifi version by 10,000 yen ($ 110) to 19,980 yen, with all other models also reduced, it said in a statement.

Tablets and smartphones are encroaching on the gaming market, with handheld consoles in particular suffering. Sony this month trimmed its forecast for handheld sales, including the Vita and older PSP, to 7 million machines in the year ending March 31 compared with an estimate of 16 million at the start of the business term.

The Vita price comes ahead of a rare Playstation gathering in New York on February 20, when Sony is expected to reveal the successor to its Playstation 3 home console.

Facebook gets unwelcome look at hackers’ dark side

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook is getting an unwelcome look at the shady side of the hacking culture that CEO Mark Zuckerberg celebrates.

Intruders recently infiltrated the systems running the world’s largest online social network but did not steal any sensitive information about Facebook’s more than 1 billion users, according to a blog posting Friday by the company’s security team.

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.

The news didn’t seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc.’s stock dipped 10 cents to $ 28.22 in Friday’s extended trading.

The main building at Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.

This time, at least, that material didn’t get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn’t say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.

It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn’t identify the targets.

“As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Facebook wrote on the blog.

Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.

Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal — two of the three largest U.S. newspapers — said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important.

Facebook didn’t identify a suspected origin of its hacking incident, but provided a few details about how it apparently happened.

The security lapse was traced to a handful of employees who visited a mobile software developer’s website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the workers’ laptops. The PCs were infected even though they were supposed to be protected by the latest anti-virus software and were equipped with other up-to-date protection.

Facebook linked part of the problem to a security hole in the Java software that triggered a safety alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last month. The government agency advised computer users to disable Java on their machines because of a weakness that could be exploited by hackers.

Oracle Corp., the owner of Java, has since issued a security patch that it says has fixed the problem. In its post, Facebook said it received the Java fix two weeks ago.

Facebook never mentioned the word “hack” in describing the breach. That, no doubt, was by design because hacking is a good thing in Zuckerberg‘s vernacular.

To most people, hacking conjures images of malevolent behavior by intruders listening to private voicemails and villains crippling websites or breaking into email accounts.

Zuckerberg provided his interpretation of the word in a manifesto titled “The Hacker Way” that he included in the documents that the company filed for its initial public offering of stock last year.

“The word ‘hacker’ has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers,” Zuckerberg wrote. “In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done.”

Microsoft says it has no backup plan if mobile efforts continue to sputter

Microsoft’s (MSFT) mobile operating system finally saw slight growth last quarter after failing to gain any real traction for two years, but it still only accounts for an estimated 3% of the global smartphone market. On the tablet front, its Windows RT operating system has not managed to attract serious attention from vendor partners or consumers. As shaky as Microsoft’s mobile comeback attempt has been, it stands to reason that the company might have a backup plan in the works — especially considering how important the smartphone and tablet spaces are right now. According to Microsoft CFO Peter Klein, however, the company has no “plan B” in place and it isn’t even considering one.

[More from BGR: Flagship HTC One smartphone revealed in leaked photo]

During the annual Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference this week, Reuters asked Klein if Microsoft has new game plan in the works in light of Windows RT and Windows Phone’s muted receptions.

[More from BGR: After using Microsoft’s Surface Pro, going back to the first Surface is agonizing]

“It’s less ‘Plan B’ than how you execute on the current plan,” the executive responded. “We aim to evolve this generation of Windows to make sure we have the right set of experiences at the right price points for all customers.”

When asked to elaborate, Klein noted that Microsoft is working with vendors to go beyond hitting lower price points and ensure that Windows RT and Windows 8 succeed on a wide range of devices, thus strengthening the Windows ecosystem and making its mobile offering more appealing.

“It’s probably more nuanced than just you lower prices or raise prices,” Klein said. “It’s less a Plan B and more, how do you tweak your plan, how do you bring these things to market to make sure you have the right offerings at the right price points?”

Sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg signs book deal

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, is writing a memoir about her years at the social network website where she was once director of marketing, publisher HarperCollins said on Thursday.

Zuckerberg, 30, signed a two-book deal with HarperCollins that will include her memoir “Dot Complicated,” and a children’s picture book, scheduled to be released in the fall.

“Technology has changed virtually every part of our lives, resulting in a modern, digital society that feels a lot like the wild, wild West,” Zuckerberg said in a statement.

“I am thrilled to be working with HarperCollins to share some of my own crazy experiences on the front lines of social media, and to inspire people of all ages to embrace technology, as well as the new set of social norms that come along with it.”

“Dot Complicated” will cover Zuckerberg’s six-year role in marketing at Facebook and her decision to leave the social media site to set up her own company, Zuckerberg Media, an entertainment production studio.

HarperCollins said the book will also be released in a digital format that will feature “innovative and engaging interactive components” that will include social media integration and a platform for crowd-sourced stories.

Zuckerberg, who left Facebook in August 2011, served as executive producer for the Bravo reality show “Start-Ups: Silicon Valley” and is the editor of the lifestyle blog “Dot Complicated.”

Newark mayor says beating, witness silence are “evil”

(Reuters) – Newark Mayor Cory Booker on Wednesday condemned the failure of witnesses to alert police after seeing a young man forced to strip naked and whipped over a $ 20 debt – violence revealed only after a cell phone video went viral on the Internet.

The two and a half minute video of the beating, which took place in Newark in August, got 40,000 views on YouTube before it was removed from the website, according to the Star-Ledger newspaper, which posted it on its own site.

“We have strong reason to believe there were others who saw this crime happen” but said nothing, never calling 911 or alerting police, the mayor said at a news conference on Wednesday to announce arrests in the case.

“In the face of evil, those who remain quiet are participants in that evil,” Booker said.

The video shows the victim complying with a man’s orders to strip naked, admit he owes $ 20 and repeatedly say “(It’s a) dog eat dog world.” The man then whips the victim, using a belt borrowed from another man, the video shows. Laughter from those watching the beating is heard throughout the video.

“This is not who we are. We are Newark, New Jersey. We do not tolerate this level of cruelty, of callous disregard for the dignity of humanity,” Booker said at the press conference.

Four people responsible for “this heinous, vicious, cruel crime” were recently apprehended and charged with robbery, assault and other crimes, Booker said.

Charged in the violence were Ahmad Holt, 22, who is believed to have carried out the whipping, Raheem Clark, 31, who is believed to have supplied the belt, Jamaar Grey, 23, accused as the cameraman, and Nicole Smith, 25, according to Booker’s office.

Newark, eight miles from Manhattan and New Jersey’s largest city, was once a thriving manufacturing center, but in recent decades it has battled an image of urban blight and high crime.

Since becoming mayor in 2006, Booker – a likely candidate for U.S. Senate next year – has made crime reduction a central priority. In March 2010, Newark experienced its first murder-free month since 1944.

But since then, amid cuts to the police force, crime has remained a significant problem in the city.

Telenor ramps up investments to support shift to data

OSLO (Reuters) – Mobile telecoms firm Telenor expects to accelerate investments in data and digital services this year as customers flock to its higher margin products, it said on Wednesday.

Telenor, which has around 150 million customers in Europe and Asia, will continue to roll out its third generation (3G) service in Thailand and fibre network in Norway to take advantage of “exploding” demand, and could also invest in 3G services elsewhere in Asia and in Denmark.

“The world is going all out on data. There are new digital concepts on every corner. It will be all about data in the future,” Chief Executive Jon Fredrik Baksaas told Reuters.

“People are becoming more dependent on data access; I compare it to electricity, people will take it for granted,” Baksaas said after the firm published quarterly results and released its initial 2013 guidance.

The transition to data, particularly in Thailand and Norway, the firm’s biggest markets, could push capital spending to between 12 and 14 percent of revenues this year from 12 percent in 2012, Baksaas said.

The shift to data, along with smaller losses in India, will allow Telenor to improve margins this year and the firm sees its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin widening to 34 percent from 32 percent.

The margin increase and a record 20 billion crown ($ 3.64 billion) cash flow in 2012 gives Telenor ample cash and it plans to pay a record dividend of 6 crowns per share after the previous year’s 5 crowns, it said.

UPSIDE

“We believe few investors will argue with the company’s decision to accelerate investment to support growth and the excellent returns in robust markets where demand for smartphones and data is accelerating,” Nomura said in a note to clients.

“The case for generating a positive return on this type of investment is more secure,” it said, maintaining a buy rating on the stock.

At 0942 GMT, Telenor shares were 2.2 percent higher at 121.7 crowns, outperforming a 0.1 percent fall by the broader telecom index.

Still, Morgan Stanley said the upside was limited given that Telenor has outperformed the telecom index by 30 percent over the past year and its valuation at 6 times it EBITDA puts it above the sector’s ratio of 5.

Fourth-quarter results, though short of expectations, had only a muted impact on valuation, particularly as they contained several one-off items, analysts said.

Analysts said they would be watching out for further clarity on Telenor’s Indian operations, as it may still seek to buy further licenses, or plans for its stake in Russia-focused Vimpelcom.

Mobile phone maker Nokia expands budget Asha line-up

HELSINKI (Reuters) – Mobile phone maker Nokia expanded its line of low-end smartphones on Tuesday with the Asha 310, which comes with dual-SIM and wi-fi access, aiming to bolster its market share in developing markets.

Nokia has been losing market share to Samsung and Apple in the high-end smartphone market and is also struggling at the low end against growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.

The Finnish company said that the new Asha 310 will come with a full-touch 3-inch display and 2 megapixel camera. The phone allows users to switch between SIM cards and wi-fi to keep down costs.

Nokia plans for the phone to be in stores in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Brazil this quarter at a price of $ 102.

Ahead of the Bell: Zynga

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Zynga climbed in premarket trading on Wednesday as the online games company’s fourth-quarter adjusted profit and revenue topped analysts’ estimates.

Zynga Inc. reported late Tuesday that its quarterly loss narrowed to 6 cents per share from a loss of $ 1.22 per share a year earlier. Its adjusted profit was 1 cent per share. Revenue was basically flat at approximately $ 311 million.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected a loss of 3 cents per share on revenue of $ 250 million.

The company managed to cut expenses by laying off workers, closing offices and shutting down poorly performing games.

Jefferies’ Brian Pitz said in a client note that Zynga Inc. had a solid beat for the quarter, but that he’s still taking a bit of a wait-and-see approach with the company until there’s evidence of “real momentum.”

The analyst is concerned that Zynga anticipates ongoing booking declines in the first quarter, and says that visibility past that quarter is very low.

Pitz reaffirmed a “Hold” rating and lifted the company’s price target to $ 3 from $ 2.50 based on the fourth-quarter results beating Wall Street’s view.

Zynga’s stock rose 11 cents, or 4 percent, to $ 2.85 before the market open. That is near the lower end of their 52-week range of $ 2.09 to $ 15.91.
